[Miata] - turning down down brake rotors at home

First, why are you turning them at all?

If they have no appreciable runout on an indicator, just clean them and use them again.  

Smooth concentric grooves are OK, too, as long as they indicate OK.  The new pads will bed into them.

By the way, "turning" is a common term, and correct in automotive usage, but from a machinist's point of view, the operation done on brake disks is "facing" and on drums is "boring".  "Turning" is done on the outside of a cylindrical object in a lathe.  :-)
