I was on my way to work at 70mph when the tone of the engine changed - it
dropped noticeably in pitch. When I pulled over at the conveniently-located
rest stop, the car was idling very roughly to the point of missing and
backfiring.
Before reaching this point, I've replaced wires, plugs, and the PCV valve.
I'm going to take David Ralph's (and a co-worker's) advice on this and look
at the exhaust valve for #4. The compression tester's gauge has a
quick-connect fitting to the hose leading into the cylinder, so I'll run
some compressed air into that cylinder at TDC and listen for escaping air at
both ends of the car. The exhaust was hazy enough (cough cough!) that this
seems like a plausible explanation.
