[Miata] Timing

Long story short:
Timing belt slipped.
While getting the timing straightened out with help from a friend, I stepped
inside for a few minutes. While I was away, friend "helped" by turning the
crankshaft (a "few times") getting the TDC notch exactly at the top. I came
back outside, we got the cams lined up, and then we stopped for the night
becuase the FLAPS sold me the wrong alternator / water pump belt.
The timing marks line up. I turned the crank through six full rotations and
verified that the I and E marks do not wander, so I'm confident the belt is
on as it should be.
My question: Am I SOL because the crank was turned independent of the cams?
Update: I buttoned everything back up. The car starts and runs, but sounds
very loud. If my crank was one turn out of phase with the cams, would the
car start at all??
Much thanks.
John
