Oh MAN, that's bad, Berck! Sorry to hear that.
We have some cheap Kelly's winters on the SAAB and they work great. But they are brand new and have A LOT of tread (they
look almost like truck tires). They are fairly well siped and have a fair amount of void, so even if the rubber compound isn't that
great it should grip reasonably well - it DOES seem to stay nice and pliant in the cold, though, so I expect they'll at least
perform acceptably if not as well as the more expensive Michelins and such.
Prior to that we had Grislaveds on the SAAB - no I don't know how to say it and they are somewhat hard to find. They were
used when I bought them and dirt cheap (120 for four steelies, new covers plus the four tires already mounted), at about 60-50%
treadlife and did reasonably well. They just didn't have the depth to handle snow this year... Of course if I'd known we weren't
going to GET any snow I would have saved the money on the Kelly's and put it towards the Hankooks RS2s for my Miata this spring :}
Going back further, I had excellent experience with Blizzaks - or Blistex, whichever you prefer :P - on my Contour SVT with
open differential. But ROTATE THEM and keep the inflation proper (keep an eye on treadwear). Mine could have lasted a lot longer if
I took better care of them.
