I'm sorry, I don't understand that logic
Your son drove the car into a pole at enough speed to crush the car and he lived and your selling your other car since you think they are unsafe??
Also the cops statement about people being ejected is stupid. Your ejected if you don't have belts on, so it has nothing to do with the car.

Subject: [Miata] hate to ask: suggestions for OTM
We've had almost all the brands you asked about. We had an older model Toyota Camry. Those cars are amazing... you don't get all the little things breaking here and there - super reliable. Don't remember the gas mileage.
Our OTM right now is a Honda CRV. It has incredible storage room, great in snow, very reliable - at 122K we're just about to replace the timing belt and I think this is the first thing we've done except routine maintenence. The down side is we only get about 16 mpg and the uphill acceleration is all but nonexistent.
We had a Saturn SL2 when our three kids were learning to drive (read, it was driven pretty hard). It got great gas mileage, had pretty good storage capacity, and three teenagers learned to drive stick shift with it. We did have the clutch replaced once, but if you don't have a wild 17 year old boy doing "pop stands" with it, you should be okay. They are all still mad we sold it, and we would all definitely have another.
My husband works for Volvo now, and that's a car not to be overlooked. We just got a used one for a nephew and it's beautiful, safe, lots of storage, and reasonably priced.
Just FYI, we no longer recommend a Miata for just any member of the family - namely young adults. Our son was lucky to be alive early yesterday morning as he drove my Miata off the road into a telephone pole. The entire car was crushed except where he was sitting. The police officer on the scene said that they don't usually see live people when a Miata is in an accident. They're normally ejected out and killed or killed in the car. If he'd had a passenger, they would be dead. We're about to sell our other one - anyone looking for a Mica Mahogany 2000 Special Edition?
Take care ~ Lydia (no longer with Mia '96 Montego Blue)
