[Miata] 3rd gear feels rough

I was taught that keeping continual pressure on the shifter is bad  
because it continues to put pressure on the shifting forks.
Studying the diagram here: http://www.howstuffworks.com/transmission3.htm
it makes sense that it would not be desirable to continue to put  
pressure on the shifter once it's in a particular gear.
