Sure you can speak generically. I am not talking about a "fancy" engine (no
need to list all variables) but a regular car engine. In general, an
internal combustion gasoline engine is pretty much the same in any vehicle.
The laws that govern fuel consumption would be the same so octane should
affect all of them similarly. I would be completely amazed if you told me
that higher octane would give you 25% better fuel economy in a 75 Pinto but
25% worse fuel economy in a 75 Vega. There cannot possibly be that large a
difference between engines so generic rules have to exist.
Yes, I am in 100% agreement that you use what your manufacture tells you to
use. You would be crazy not to. My truck 93 is recommended but you can use
anything you want - so I do and opt for the cheaper fuel. Loan me you
ScanGauge II and I'll do some tests!
