[Miata] Stepping on a mouse

Start by removing the AC belt and have someone grab the AC compressor and see if it is firmly mounted to the engine. The old wiggle test would be enough to find out. my 91 constantly had a squeaky belt until we found the bracket mounted to the engine was loose. Once I unbolted the compressor and rebolted the mount to the engine and replaced the missing bolts that had fallen out the noise went away. If the compressor is snug, replace the belt and have it tensioned properly. Use a quality belt, not a store brand. I'd use a Goodyear Gatorback if you can get one.

That's exactly what it sounds like - stepping on a mouse's tail.
EK!
Short but squeaky. It happens almost every time I push the A/C button or turn the vent control to one of the defrost positions. Almost every time but not dependably enough to demonstrate to a mechanic. It often sounds as if it's coming from the back but is probably originating in the engine bay as it sounds like a very short slipping belt or clutch or something. There's not much that could squeak like that at the back anyway. It seems to make no difference if the engine's hot or cold.
Sometimes it happens on acceleration but mostly it's on starting the A/C. The Mazda folks couldn't find it and it's becoming annoying.
Any ideas, O Miata/MX5 gurus? Guri? Whatever...
