Don't shut off the water through the heater core. You can bypass it if you want by just removing the hoses at the firewall and attaching them together. If you do this make sure you keep an eye on the temp gauge since you are removing a certain amount of the cooling system capacities.

Subject: [Miata] Miata heater shut off/bypass?
Before getting the a/c fixed, I've been trying to reduce heat inside the cabin, with some success. I've checked the flapper door travel with instructions from the 'garage,' and replaced both shift boots, which were torn.
That helps, but I still end up with hot feet, as over time there's enough radiative heat in the dash from the hot water flowing through. The a/c handles the top side, but there's no vent on my feet.
So..has anyone put in a shut off or bypass valve for the heating system? Is there an article I missed in the garage on this? I'm hoping I can install a stainless ball valve and some fittings to bypass the cabin entirely.
Lacking that, if someone could pdf the water flow diagram, I could work from there.
regards,
Sean
