    I had the identical experience to you some years ago, with a local BMW club.  Aside from a very few members, most considered it the province of the working class to actually turn a wrench.  I tried in vain to find someone interested in restoration (I had a 2002).  After attending one "meeting" where the majority of the conversation dealt with one-upping each other as to which tony ski resort had been attended, I dumped them.   No, I don't think most bmw clubs are like that; it was just my experience with that particular club.

    Find another club.  They're out there.  My experience has been that the people doing autox and racing really enjoy learning and turning wrenches.  I'd attend a local autox if you can find one, and see what's available.
