No your not going to feel the play in the steering wheel. If you do your in big trouble as to how bad the bearing really is. I would change both if I had a bad bearing, that's just the way I work. I feel if one is bad at xxx miles the other can't be far behind. 150 for the part is about right form the dealer, aftermarket is about 100.

He hasn't heard the noise--was asking me on the phone. No play what so ever in the wheel, other than the usual power steering shit (why? why?? Why??) I should notice that when I am driving, right?
Well, I figure its the front--and I figured about $150. If its just one-i.e. the right--should he change both, just in case?
And then we get the AC changed over and working--
After that, its on to the new top and windshield, THEN the paint. Figured the paint would requie lots of extras--a new bra, a car cover--or the hoped for car-port-- so it would be last on the exterior. Gonna paint the wiper assemblies this week.

Well let's see, why would you pay a mechanic to do something if the guy can't tell if the bearings are bad and which ones are bad??? That should be his job to determine the cause.
If the front bearings are bad you most likely will have play in the wheel. So if you jack up the car and hold the top and the bottom of the wheel and try to wiggle it in and out you can see if there is play.
The rear ones are harder to tell.
I've not yet had bad back bearings but have had bad front ones on all 3 of my early vintage Miatas. BTW, the wheel bearings aren't changed separately on the front, you need to change the whole wheel hub for 100 plus dollar part. Yes, when the brakes are being done would be a great time to change them and it shouldn't cost more than about another 15 minutes labor to do both since all that is involved is removing a nut and pulling the hub off.

OK, think I may be getting some wheel bearing issues--that ole familiar noise, just very slightly. Now--my mechanic asks me--"front or rear". Its a small car, and I am in the front. Any way to know? And whats involved in changing these babies out--can it be done when I get my brake pads changed, with a minimum of additional fuss?
Thank, folks--jeeze, I miss Chris Evans in Summerville!!
