[Miata] Adjusting rear brakes....

Hi all,

ok... about 2 weekends ago I pulled my brakes off to grease the caliper
sliders to see if that was the source of a "thoonk" noise I was getting.
It wasn't but I have a question.

According to my enthusast's "red book", I used an allen wrench to adjust
out the rear brakes. On reinstall, I was told to turn the key in "until
the pad just touches the rotor." I did that -- and since then I've
noticed that my front brakes are REALLY black after city driving --
comparable to many cars who never clean their wheels.

Could someone help me understand what "just touches the rotor" means? I
get the feeling that they are too far "out" and the front brakes are
taking more than their share of stopping energy. I don't want to just
randomly adjust them in and out because, well, I just don't think that's
a good idea.
