What Keith said. I drove mine for two years with nothing in the trunk and four proper snows. Even lowered, I was able to drive through two of Cincinnati's worst snowstorms with ease.
...of course, fancy snow tires do nothing for you when your car is in the garage and the snow outside the door is almost a foot thick...ask me how I know <G>

The biggest things I've always noticed in winter driving a Miata (and when I was in university, my Miata was my only car):
- the nimble responses from the summer mean that things happen fast in the winter. It can snap sideways in a hurry. Of course, it's also quick to get back straight, but things are going to happen more quickly than something with a long wheelbase and big weight.
- those little snowbanks that build up between lanes are your biggest enemy. They can throw you sideways pretty fast.
- there's not a huge amount of ground clearance, of course.
- with four snow tires, they're pretty good in the winter.
