Sand in trunk? Not good idea- it'll throw off the balance of the car.
Snow tires on all four corners- good idea. I live in CT, have a 55 mile
round trip commute, and have been driving the Miata year round for ten years
now. A good set of snows makes a WORLD of difference. I run Yokohama
Guardexes (they have a good ice/snow rubber compound similar to what the
Bridgestone Blizzaks have, but in the Yokos it goes all the way through the
tread as opposed to the Blizzaks where my understanding is
that it's only half the tread thickness); and have heard good things about
Nokian Hakkapallitas (sp?) on the list as well.

Sand in the trunk - good idea? How much would one carry to increase
traction without upsetting weight distribution too much?
