FYI...all the posts on the Volvo 240 brake calipers led me to find a page that
shows an upgrade from the 240 caliper directly to the VR70R caliper which is a
Brembo caliper (requiring an adapter which can be purchased) with 13"
rotors....NEW Brembo calipers $200+/-(without core add $40), rotors $105, pads
for $60...plus the pads will be around for quite some time because they fit a
Volvo VR70R.
Scroll down the page and there are some very good pictures and descriptions of
this brake swap. The project actually looks quite doable and simple.

Thanks for the note Chuck!
I'll do some research (how big a wing to add on the house, etc).
Wichita and "reasonably close", eh? ROADTRIP!

Anyone know how to get the blue book value of a used fire truck? I am
trying to get the information for my local volunteer fire department.

There are so many lifts out there it is mind boggling
When we go to barrett Jacksons there is a sea of lifts. All heavily
discounted. Particularly the displays as they do not want to bring them
back home.
I wish someone would do a lift shootout, like we see on cars and other
things.
Maybe a consumer report shootout on lifts.
So many lifts so little time

You cannot buy directly from the manufacturer. I forget where I bought
it from (somewhere on the internet). There was a wide range of prices
for the same thing from different places.
Doing a google search for: 4 post lift ... I found:
http://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html<http://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html<http://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html%3Chttp://www.asedeals.com/garage_lift.html>>
3 years ago I paid $2200. This included taxes, shipping, drip plates and
sliding jack plate.

Hi David,
About 5 years I did all of my lift research. The best out there is Mohawk
http://www.mohawklifts.com<http://www.mohawklifts.com/<http://www.mohawklifts.com%3chttp//www.mohawklifts.com/>> I bought there Sys 1
(10,000 pound) two post
lift http://www.mohawklifts.com/consumer/system1.php<http://www.mohawklifts.com/consumer/system1.php<http://www.mohawklifts.com/consumer/system1.php%3Chttp://www.mohawklifts.com/consumer/system1.php>>
This thing is made
from real thick steel. The base plate was like 7/8" thick. My lift has a
hydraulic cylinder on each side, no chains or cables involved. When I told
them I wanted to install the lines under ground they made all the lines and
fittings up to my drawings for $100.
They also sell 4 post models, but I wanted a two post like SOBill.

provide parts and service, if needed on the now-orphan (like Panteras)

Hi everyone especially Dan Jones, I am looking to purchase a stroker kit
from Flatlander racing, but the only forged kit for the cleveland that they
offer is internally balanced. They seem to be the only shop that offers a
standard size piston for the stroker kit, without a custom order. Can I use
it and
what do I need to do to use an internal balanced system.

You would need a damper and flywheel which are (zero?) balanced for an
internally balanced crank. I would suspect that most the dampers for internally
balanced motors are race parts, and the weight seems to vary a lot. I'm not
sure what the tradeoffs are for light weight dampers versus heavier ones, but it
might be worth looking into before you spend $300+ on one. I think John Bentley
has commented on most of this, and probably would be a good source of info.
Because most of these dampers are race parts, you'd need to make sure
you get one with the 4 bolt Cleveland pattern, because most have a 3 bolt
pattern. One like this might be good:

Randy Gillis (SP?) who is/was a custom piston guy at J&E is also
knowledgeable regarding Cleveland strokers. He might be a good person for you
top call about pistons and about Cleveland strokers. Just be prepared to
receive a dozen conflicting opinions from as many experts. It can shake your
faith in objective truth, LOL.

Are you sure it's not the other way around? Most of the kits are
designed for external balance and you pay more for internal balance
because they must insert slungs of expensive mallory metal into the
crank throws.

You need a flywheel and balancer with zero balance.

Stephen,
This plastic gear is the part that the teeth normally strip on; I suggest a
cyber trip to ebay UK and you can pick up a used wiper motor from a Jaguar,
Triumph or Austiin Mini for a couple quid (GBP Sterling). I got a NOS wiper
motor this way for 17GBP or ~US$35.

Mark,
If the door height is close to clearing the door I just
added a layer of 1 1/8" plywood on the trailer where
the tires track only. It clears but be careful if it
is close and big guys like you and me can flex
the suspension down when moving around trying
to work your way out of the beast.... I touched the
fender of the door once doing this

I grew up on Minis - when the gear got worn, we'd just take it off and spin it
180 degrees. The mechanism only uses half of the wheel so the other side of the
wheel has no wear - or at least it does on a mini.

Stephen,
This plastic gear is the part that the teeth normally strip on; I suggest a
cyber trip to ebay UK and you can pick up a used wiper motor from a Jaguar,
Triumph or Austiin Mini for a couple quid (GBP Sterling). I got a NOS wiper
motor this way for 17GBP or ~US$35.

[don't know if this embedded graphic comes through - does anyone have part

Mike - many thanks as always - I do not have the original headers, but I do
appear to have stock GTS headers (4 to 2 to 1), mufflers, and chrome-tipped,
angled-up tailpipes - take from your note that other than used (or NOS), muffler
alone is not available - thanks for that, perhaps I'll look to weld/refab it -
any welders refabbers out there in the SCPOCA world? - thanks, Stephen

"no". Besides, the actual tailpipe is only a small percentage of the overall

Your car is a Euro GTS. Do you have proper GTS exhausts on your car? You
should have 4-into-2-into-1 headers, and larger-diameter tailpipes.
Larger than what? Well, than the standard exhausts, which were small and
girly.
Let me go measure mine....
Dial caliper says just a shade over 2 1/4 inches. That's what you should
have, no?

Hi All - I wanted to address Chuck's last paranthetical - "if they'll fit in
your garage" - I recently bought a 4 post lift for my 2 car residential garage -
prior to that, I spent months researching garage door manufacturers and
installers trying to figure out how to make it fit - I have 10.5' ceilings and
so am very lucky there - even so, no one could give me a solution to maximize
that space - one problem was that folks wanted to stay with my traditional
opener, which needs to hook on to the middle door - so to high lift it, they
needed to add either a standard 18" or 21" door panel, which left a lot of
inches on the table - the solution...a new "jack shaft" opener for residential
use from Liftmaster, released to the market last November. This opener mounts
on the side of the door, right at the torsion bar - so no center rail (which
connected the traditional opener to the door), no additional door panels, and
the door is now 6 inches off of the ceiling - as an
additional plus, because this solution does not require additional door
panels (a cost savings in of itself and allows added flexibility), the entire
door does not go over on the horizontal as far...meaning it goes up 33 or so
inches up vertically before before curving to the horizontal...as a result, when
the door clears the jamb and stops raising, it has gone 33 or so inches LESS
along the horizontal track, so this allows more vertical, useable sq. footage,
as less of it is bisected by the door - hope this makes sense, anyone please
feel free to email me for more info on the opener or the installer for the
SCPOCA gang - thanks, stephen

Dear David,
When (circa 2000) I was in the market for a lift and checked
around and learned that, for whatever reasons, there were three or more lift
manufacturers in Wichita, Kansas.
I took a day off and went up and toured the three facilities
and inspected things. AutoLifters was most impressive. They gave me a
good price on a package plus extras and then did not charge me shipping down
the interstate to Oklahoma City.
In the last seven years, there have been a few things happen and
they have been very responsive and easy to deal with.
Wichita is reasonably close to Durango. You might make a road
trip out of the Journey to Lift Land.......!
Lifts are very good (if they'll fit in your garage),

Indeed, I ended up getting a Bend-Pak (HD9 wide) - it is priced pretty
agressively lift alone (2.4K delievered, no tax from AES) - that was for the
lift, without the drip trays, casters or jack trays - true, if you include
those, the bp product become almost 1K more expensive - so, true, apples to
apples, it is not there, but apples to oranges (which is how I convince myself
when I really want something), I said a bp lift today for a few hundred more,
i'll get the accessories later ... thanks, sl

I guess their product was too good & their margins were too low. This is
what you get when you search for them.
I saw the post on Bendpak. Bendpak makes great product. I have some of
their tire equipment.
Rgds,

Dear Customers,
I am deeply saddened at the loss of yet another competitor . As of today
Tuesday May 3rd 2005 the website www.autolifters.com<http://www.autolifters.com/<http://www.autolifters.com%3chttp//www.autolifters.com/>>
and the phone number
800-759-0703 local 316-630-0011 are no longer functioning. It has been a
rumor that the company could not sustain the competative pricing brought
about by all the Chinese imports and aparently the Chinese dominance has
taken it's toll on yet another American manufacturer. We suggest that if
you have placed orders with the company and have not received your product
that you do whatever you feel is in your best interests. If for some
reason between the time this e-mail goes out and you receive it, their web
site and phone numbers are turned back on please disregard this alert.

I looked at the SCAT website, and they say that all the 351 cranks which use
up to a 6 inch rod are 28 oz externally balanced, and all the cranks made to use
greater than 6 inch rods are internally balanced. Can someone explain why?
Looked at the Eagle site, looks like all the forged 2.75 main cranks are
internally balanced. They do have a cast 3.85 stroke 2.75 main crank with a 28
oz balance. They have one of these listes with their Specials for $233 with
"cosmetic blemish". might be a good deal?
All I can guess is that they think anyone buying a 2.75 main crank is
building a race motor and wants an internally balanced crank???
One question for Dan, I know that Jack (maybe others) have said that the
block is the weak link with a Cleveland. I'm wondering if a good cast crank
will break before the main webbing etc. in a Cleveland block fails?

Are you sure it's not the other way around? Most of the kits are
designed for external balance and you pay more for internal balance
because they must insert slungs of expensive mallory metal into the
crank throws.

That's surprising, as well. Have you tried:

You need a flywheel and balancer with zero balance.

just bought that make and model a month or so ago - after a lot of research,
ASE was the cheapest at 2400 delivered to the house (no tax), but no additional
accessories at that price:

Bend-Pak HD-9
You cannot buy directly from the manufacturer. I forget where I bought
it from (somewhere on the internet). There was a wide range of prices
for the same thing from different places.
Doing a google search for: 4 post lift ... I found:

3 years ago I paid $2200. This included taxes, shipping, drip plates and
sliding jack plate.
