[DeTomaso] gas tank advice needed

Greg Esakoff built the tank for his car originally. It has a kickout where
the brake booster was and will only fit on a car without a booster. Its not
by any means conformal but not quite off the shelf either. Greg would be the
one to talk to about the front mount fuel tank. Im not sure what he is using
these days.

        I talked to one of the guys at Wilkinson's and I think he said you
can get around 20 gal in a conformal fuel cell in the nose.  I think Blaine
(http://www.cardomain.com/ride/316764) is using an off the self rectangular
cell.  He said he planned to add a second tank behind the seats to increase
capacity.

        I have my original 72 tank which was cleaned and coated by Precision
Proformance and never re-installed.  I plan to do a conformal fuel cell in
the nose so I would consider selling it, but shipping would be a $ pain.

    Installing a fuel cell in the front trunk would seem to be an excellent
    idea-- safer and redistributes weight to the front.

    I have seen Pantera fuel tanks show up on Ebay occasionally. Also, we
have

    a member on Vancouver Island who just finished a 7 year restoration,
part of

    which included mounting a fuel cell in the front trunk since his custom

    headers for the twin-turbos required moving the old tank.



    Blaine, do you still have your old gas tank, and is it in usable
condition?

    More unfortunate news concerning the car I just bought (1972), the gas
tank

    has a slow leak, so with the generous help of Mike Thomas and Gary
Herrig we

    pulled the motor and tranny to remove the tank. Performance Radiator in

    Tacoma, WA cleans, treats, fixes and then coats tanks and, in fact, just
did

    a Pantera tank not too long ago.



    I took my tank to them, but just got a call informing me there was a
bunch

    of JB weld on the tank, and when they scraped it off, the holes they
found

    were "significant." Although they said they could still fix it ($325.00)

    they said due to the difficulty of removing the tank, I might want to

    consider other options, such as replacing it.



    My survey question to you all is: should I have them repair it for $325,

    buy a new tank for I don't know how much, or try to find a good used
tank?

    The risk I see in buying a used tank is that since it will be 35 years
old,

    too, to be safe I'd probably want to have it coated anyway, which might
make

    the cost not that much less than just buying a new one.
