Mark, from what I remember, a bimetallic thermocouple is only two dissimilar 
wires that actually generate a small voltage between the iron & constantin 
wires at the junction where they're welded, and the current is much larger at 
higher temps, so I don't think you should ever see an open circuit. Possibly the 
thermocouple wires are cracked? If so, simply rewelding them back together 
should restore the thermocouple part of the circuit. This really is a SOBill-type
