Hey Mike Drew, there is no true exception to the rule, if you have a 180 stat, then it will open and flow that temp water. If your gauge reads 140 then these items need to be dealt with. Is temp sensor and or gauge working correctly?  Where is the temp sensor located?  It should always be at the intake frontal top.  Is the stat doing its job correctly? My Ghiblis have  a dual thermostat setup so to cover any stat faults and when open, to flow a much higher volume of water  than asingle so overheating would not happen. Since my car has only   3507.   miles,  rust is not a problem. I may make a dual stat housing for these prior stated reasons. Use a temp gun and measure your true temp, you may surprised to find your gauge system is off. Good luck, Jeff Cobb 1196.
