[DeTomaso] [NPC] OBD2 Code Scanners

The check engine light came on the other day on my 1997 Ford Ranger.  There
is no other indication of a problem.  I would like to find out what
triggered the light, so that I do not have to pay the local Ford Dealer $100
only to find out that it is time to change an air filter.

There are the OBD2 readers on EBay for under $50 that will display the code.
As I recall, there was some brouhaha a few years ago about automakers not
giving out the problem descriptions for the code numbers.  Is that still
true?  If I find out the answer is "42", will I be able to find out what
question it answers?
