The short answer;
 
Disconnect the wires which go to the two ammeter terminals. Slide  about 
three inches of heat shrink tubing over the wires which came off each  terminal 
and get it as far from the terminals as you can. Bolt all the wires  securely 
together. Slide one piece of heat shrink tubing over the bolted  junction and 
shrink the tubing. Slide the second piece of heat shrink tubing of  the junction 
and shrink it. Tie wrap the junction to the other wiring such that  it cannot 
chafe on anything.
 
If you cannot use heat shrink tubing, wrap the junction  securely with 
electrically tape. Remember, that junction goes directly to the  positive terminal 
of the battery.
