Actually, umbrella coverage could in fact pay; that's why you have it.
Suppose you t-boned a car and 2 people got life threatening injuries and were
paralyzed. Your car liability coverage would soon be used up and the injured party
would sue you personally for your other assets, including your house. Umbrella
policies protect you in those cases. The higher umbrella coverage would
supplement your automobile coverage.
On another note, every state has different licensing requirements for the
insurance companies so comparing one state to another can sometimes be difficult,
even for the same insurance company. For example, in Texas, State Farm does
not have a "Collector Car" insurance company. Further, they do not have an
"Agreed Amount" policy, only "Stated Value." Stated Value means they pay what they
think is reasonable but not more than the "Stated Value" that you requested.
Stated Value protects the insurance company more than it protects you.
In my business, I have to deal with the insurance companies. I agree with the
comments about Farmers. Same for Progressive. Progressive's aggressive
approach here in Dallas interesting. When you have an accident, they don't tow it
the shop of your choice, or even to one of their "direct repair" shops. They tow
your car to one of their lots where they have cheap labor take it apart and,
then, they send it to a body shop that agrees to do it for Progressive's price
and to have it done by Progressive's deadline, regardless of what other work
the body shop might have in their queue. Supplements are very difficult to
get. When it's done, the car returns to Progressive's lot where they have cheap
labor reassemble it. So much using ICAR certified repairmen.
As, the Doctor Engles just said, "Ain't insurance great!"
