Cleveland based heads on a race block is a great way to go if the budget
allows but understand those blocks aren't Windsor blocks. They are hybrid
race blocks with some Cleveland and some Windsor attributes and some
custom bits. Also understand that the payout on the EMC is based upon
manufacturer supplied contingency money. CHI and World Products were
sponsors so a lot of people went with that combination but that doesn't
mean it's the best. Also, there are rules which exclude certain parts.
If the heads were unrestricted, there are better heads than the CHI, for
instance.
In my opinion, Cleveland heads on a production Windsor block is of marginal
utility. One of the EMC entrants told me he sonic tested a bunch of Windsor
and Cleveland blocks and they were very similar with respect to wall
thickness. He ended up running a production 351C block the same year Kaase
won with an XE Cleveland block.
There are two approaches. Build everything with premium parts so it
fails less often or build stuff on a budget so that when it fails,
it won't be so expensive to fix. You pays your money ad takes your
chances.
