[DeTomaso] ZF Removal

Yep, it's not too difficult of a job. The engine/ZF assembly needs to be
tilted up at the rear to clear the rear bulkhead if you unbolt the AC
condenser and lay it across the fender (with the AC lines still attached).
Remove the rear ZF mounting bolts, loosen the motor mount bolts, disconnect
the clutch slave cylinder and starter, and pull the distributor (or at least
remove the cap), then the engine can be angled up enough to slide the ZF
back. And don't forget to remove the sheet metal bell housing cover
underneath the car or you'll drive yourself crazy trying to figure out why
the bell housing is still stuck on the engine block. Once the engine is at
the proper angle, stick a bottle jack and piece of plywood against the pan
to keep everything steady. Normally the ZF and bell housing will slip free
fairly easily.

Two guys can easily lift the ZF out of the engine bay or one guy can really
struggle with it and probably maybe get it out. The least effort is to use
a cherry picker with some nylon webbing wrapped around the ZF case.

Dear Will,

Very interesting. I have been thinking of doing the same
transmission mount mod. Did you do the mod, yourself?
As I recollect, the extraction distance for the ZF input shaft
into the crank pilot bushing , is * about* 2-3 inches. This is a rough
estimate. I would *guess* that you would still need to angle the rear of
the ZF up to assure enough room. From what I have been told, the trans
mount mod still makes things easier. I am curious to hear from more
experienced in-Pantera ZF pullers to comment.

                     Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

How much does the ZF have to move back from the motor before it can be
removed? My mounts have been modified so I can remove the rear mount tabs,
but there's only about 3.5" before it would touch the chassis.
