Since you live in Houston, if you're not already hooked up with the 
Space City Pantera Club, you're wrong.

They are having a get-together later this month, where they will 
literally be dismantling a Pantera down to the last nut, bolt and 
screw, and Kirk Evans is spiriting the bare body away back to his shop. 
  I can't possibly imagine a better hands-on education for you.  Do 
whatever it takes to get involved; Kirk will be there as well as 
numerous other knowledgable people, and you will get at least a 
bachelor's degree in Pantera inspection in that one day!

As far as finding somebody to check the car out for you, I would 
suggest putting the arm on Forest Majors, who lives a bit north in 
Connecticut, and is quite smart on these cars.  Alternately, since John 
Taphorn is a bum these days, you might throw him an airline ticket and 
have him accompany you to eyeball the car.  I can't imagine money 
better spent!
