Unless your car is extraordinary, normally cranking it cold without 
giving the throttle at least a token pump will result in endless 
cranking but no starting.  My GT350 would start right on the button in 
1/20th of a revolution if I pumped the gas once before turning the key. 
  When it sat for awhile, my technique was to just turn the key and hold 
it, watching the oil pressure gauge as the engine turned over.  As soon 
as oil pressure came up, one pump and VAROOM.  That's with no choke.

My Pantera has an electric choke, sits for eons without starting, and 
normally has to crank a fair bit with a few judicious throttle 
applications before it will light off.  What about yours?
