Generally, Lloyd Butfoy and Dennis Quella charge about $1200-1500 just
to crack the case open and put it back together. That covers all the
'normal' labor, gaskets, and a few minor things that they do to every
gearbox they overhaul. (You would have to ask them for specifics).

Every gearbox is different, however, and the amount of damage inside
yours could drive the price up dramatically--or not. They are normally
pretty good about having a good supply of good, used parts on hand to
help keep prices low; i.e. if you had a bad 3rd gear for some reason,
they would probably offer you the choice of a new or used replacement.

Few people actually pay to put a new 4.22 ring and pinion in; if you're
going to buy a new one, you might as well buy a desirable one, i.e.
3.77 (which alone costs upwards of $2500). Having said that, since so
many people have made this conversion, there are plenty of good, used,
stock 4.22 sets lying around, and presumably those could be had for
considerably less.

What exactly prompts this query?

FWIW I wouldn't spend a dime to replace a 4.22 with another one; if I
was paying to have a gearbox pulled apart and put back together, I
would either go for a taller 5th gear, or a 3.77 R&P if there was
something wrong with my 4.22.

Mike
