They do arbitrarily break. They reach the end of their life and let go. That's why it's
so important to regularly change timing belts on non-Pantera vehicles at the
prescribed service intervals - to avoid catastrophic engine damage (especially if it's
an interference engine) when the belt reaches the end of it's life.
