Jim,
After I lost a sheer pin in the 7th ORR of 2004 we pulled the MSD distributor and it was also chewed up. Replaced it with Comp Cams steel gear with no subsequent problems during 2005 season.

Yes, it is a steel roller cam and I think it was made by Isky. Can't really remember. The distrubutor gear is bronze.
I have a iron gear for the distrubutor if that will solve the problem?
Thanks for your help

There have been ongoing issues with aftermarket Ford cleveland dist gears
and cams that are incompatible with each other.....and I think some cam
cores that were bad for a while where the teeth were cut at a wrong angle to
the camshaft. Steel billet cams in particular need to be very carefully
matched to the correct type of dist gear-exactly following the maker's
directions. The stock Ford iron gears seem to be the best bet for most cams.
That's how I recall the discussions anyway.
Is/was your cam a steel billet roller? Is your dist gear a bronze one?

Subject: [DeTomaso] Distrubutor Gear Chewed Up
To All,
OK, this something I haven't read about here or in the archives. My Pantera
stopped running during warmup. Inspection showed the distrubutor rotor not
turning with the motor cranking. I pulled the distrubutor planning to
replace the shear pin but the gear teeth are "filed" down to very thin
points causing several broken teeth. The pin is fine.
I rebuilt the motor about 4500 miles ago using one of the cams that came
with the car(Tony Harvey's basket case off of E-bay). Everything seemed to
be fine. I was sure to install the cam thrust plate properly. The
distrubutor is a near new Mallory Unilight that came with the car.
My guesses are:
1 - The gear is installed improperly
2 - The cam is "walking"
3 - Wrong cam
4 - Something else I'm not aware of
Any help that would shed light on this situation will be greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance.
