First, thanks to all that replied.
I can only report progress on the IE issue, where I had no toolbars nor
address line in my browser windows. Paid Bill Gates $35 to learn that all I
needed to do was delete a single folder from the registry. It was something
like "HKEY_CURRENT_USER/programs/software/microsoft/internet
explorer/toolbars and the folder deleted was "web browser". Who makes this
stuff up anyway? Since the fix was so simple, Bill et al refunded the $$$.
Or so they said, I'll check my VISA statement carefully.
On the "keep my dial up e-mail address for sentimental reasons but start
using my new computer which is cable not dial up" issue, there seem to be at
least two schools of thought. One is that I could run dial up and cable
simultaneously, or at least one at a time with possibly having to disconnect
the cable during dial up sessions. The other school of thought is that
Outlook Express should be able to find my dial up e-mail using the cable, if
all the settings in Outlook match the settings on the old machine.
Important points I didn't get across the first time are: I never installed
the comcast software, but the cable connection hooks me to the internet
nonetheless. I've found the same to be approximately true with DSL. I want
to not get beholden to comcast, I want to be able to play hardball with them
on the billing, threaten to switch to Verizon DSL if they won't give me a
good rate. And from my rudimentary grasp of the situation, the computer
won't know the difference in the signal on the network card/"big phone
line".
When I click on a "mail to", the Outlook Express wizard starts. At this
moment, I'm tempted to just try to set up OE like it's set up on the old
machine, and see if it finds my dial up mail on the internet via the cable.
The best possible world I can imagine would be to have some kind of
"software switch", where I would know where in OE to change a setting to
make it look for e-mail on dial-up or cable/DSL, with that control I could
really squeeze the high speed providers with "fine, I'll go back to dial
up".
Not in my wildest imagination 20 years ago would I have pictured myself
knowing anything about building a computer, buying them like junk cars and
combining parts, dealing with software issues like above...
