[DeTomaso] Removable crossmember

John,
Somebody mentioned to check the rod and main bearings for wear while the
pan's off - which is a great idea. If you really want to get serious about
it, you can even measure the bearing clearances with plastigauge. I
recently did an engine-in-the-car rod and main bearing swap out after an oil
analysis detected elevated copper and tin (bearing material), so it's
definitely a doable job. It is not especially fun however - laying on your
back with oil dripping in your face trying to loosen and tighten overhead
bolts with poor leverage, sliding in and out from under the car
eleventy-seven times so you can turn the crank pulley to the next rod
journal. Did I mention oil dripping in your face. In my case the bearing
surfaces weren't horrible but worn enough (copper beginning to peaking
through) that I'm glad I changed them. I think next time I'll pull the
engine out though. I hate the oil dripping in your face part.
As far as the emergency brake bracket, my personal suggestion would be to
get one of the aftermarket brackets (D. Quella has them). It's basically a
piece of squatty channel steel that's flattened on both ends. The channel
bridges the frame rails and is pre-drilled to hold the under-car lever and
cables for the emergency brake. It's held on with four small bolts so you
can easily remove it again - so no interference the next time you have to
yank the pan. Bolts right on except you have to drill and tap four little
holes.

Subject: [DeTomaso] Removable crossmember
All,
I will be installing a removable crossmember and installing my Armando pan
very soon. Thus,
I have a few questions:
1) does anyone have any pics of the bracket to remount the emergency
brake. A picture is worth a
thousand words and I can't read that fast.
2) I was planning on using a sawzall. Any other recommendations?
3) Is there anything that I should look for, do, or replace while I have
the pan off?
thank you in advance for your time.
