The sawzall will go right through the cross member, no problem.  Be sure to
have an extra blade or two as they are easy to snap in that confined area.

Once the cross member is off, you will need something to grind off the
leftover bits on the frame rail.

check for copper showing. If any copper color is visible on any bearing
insert, that means no babbit is left & its time to at least replace all the
engine bearings"

I'll add: pull the oil pump off and check for signs of wear and upgrade the
shaft if it is still the original.  Also, take lots a pictures for future
reference.
