would rattle your fillings out.  I checked it out and discovered the halfshafts 
had both been assembled incorrectly, out of phase--what a nightmare that would 
have been had he chosen to continue driving it!

The factory halfshaft halves are stamped with a two-digit number and 
alignment arrows, as per Jack's recommendation, but painting (and especially 
powdercoating) can fill them in and render them invisible, so making your own marks 
that will survive after refinishing is definitely a good idea.
