I'm no expert, but the symptoms you describe are consistant with a coil 
conking out.  Look at your coil and see if it is spooging ugly black 
goo?  That's a sure sign!

Often (apparently), the coil will work fine when cold, but as it heats 
up, it loses effectiveness, the car sputters to a halt, cools down, 
then the coil works again, and again, and again....

Replacement coils are cheap and easy to install.  Give that a whirl.
