Sorry to hear about the problems on the way home. Takes all the fun  out of 
the day.
 
Your description sounds like a typical heat problem with the  ignition coil.
 
Try heating the ignition coil with a heat gun or a hair drier until  it is 
very warm to the touch and then try to start the car. If it will not  start, 99% 
you have a bad coil.
 
If it starts when the coil is warm, try the same thing on the  ballast 
resistor ... if you have one.
