The EPA has mandated changes in Dino oil formulations,
these are probably the root of the problems. The
problem are related to flat tappet camshaft failure.  
Roller lifters are not prone to this failure mode. 

Comp cams makes the following suggestions:
Break-In Oil Additive 
Shell Rotella T for the break-in procedure.
Flat tappet lifters with oiling holes in the cam face
surface - supplies more oil to the cam friction
surfaces
lifter bore grooving tool - supplies more oil to the
cam friction surfaces
