I just got a call from Tom "Tommy-Gun" Di Iulio whose driving back to Colorado from Nebraska....so here's a quick and incomplete report on his finishing the Nebraska Sand Hills Open Road Race...
Tom and his Pantera and the new engine had a great successful run as the first and the only Pantera to ever run the San Hills ORR in Nebraska.
Tom 'averaged' over 100 MPH on a very technical course. In terms of technical difficulty it sounds as if only the La Carrera ORR in Mexico is more of a challenge. Anyone entering over 100 MPH Division needs a roll bar, 5-point harness etc....The fastest speed was set by a dedicated Winston cup race car that also set the RECORD for the course and he only averaged 133 MPH which IS a course record.
Even the Nevada and Texas ORR veterans say you can not lose focus for a nanosecond on this road or get in over your head on a turn or a hill on that road. The entire road course is a series of elevation changes and serious turns many of which are off camber.
The event slowed on the 2nd half due to a bad accident when another Winston Cup race car went off the road rolled his car damaging it severly. Also 1 Viper BURNT to the ground and you know how those plastic cars know how to burn! ;-] Another 2 Vettes (?) also went off the road.
Tommy Gun's finish and the Pantera got allot of kuddo's from all the veteran drivers and locals IN Nebraska many of whom had NEVER seen a Pantera before...He said local biting horse flys were so bad (must be the local pig farming) that he couldn't wear shorts. There was also allot of heat and humidity...yet he and the Pantera both finished and made us proud.
CONGRAT'S TOMMY...when you get a chance tell us how it went.
YOU DA MAN
