Why remove all the plugs and prop the throttle open? Is that so the fuel
mixture is vented out the plug ports and doesn't build up with each cylinder
check? Before, I had disconnected the coil wire to prevent firing.

I think the key issue is the variation among cylinders.
I vote for (and do it) cold.
PS: I also remove all the plugs and prop the throttle wide open. The starter
motor like this method.
